Ka Ora, Ka Ako | healthy school lunches programmeKa Ora, Ka Ako | the healthy school lunches programme aims to reduce food insecurity by providing access to a nutritious lunch in school every day. By September 2020, over one million lunches have been served in 64 schools to over 13,700 students. Flaxmere Primary School students enjoy their lunch. Regular nutritious food is vital for children’s physical, mental and educational development. It affects their ability to focus, concentrate and learn. Around one in five children in New Zealand live in households that struggle to put enough good-quality food on the table. In communities facing greater socio-economic barriers, 40 percent of parents run out of food sometimes or often. Ka Ora, Ka Ako aims to reduce food insecurity by providing access to a nutritious lunch every day. Research indicates that reducing food insecurity for children and young people:
About Ka Ora, Ka Ako In 2019, the Government announced a two-year initiative to explore delivering a free and healthy daily school lunch to Year 1 to 8 (primary and intermediate aged) students in schools with high levels of disadvantage. Around 10,000 learners in 42 schools across Bay of Plenty/Waiariki and Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti were the first to get a free school lunch in Term 1, 2020. Over 3,000 students in 18 schools and kura across Otago and Southland joined Ka Ora, Ka Ako in Terms 2 and 3. As part of the initial programme, another 51 schools in Bay of Plenty/Waiariki and Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti will begin delivering lunches in Term 4 2020. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ka Ora, Ka Ako is being expanded to reach around 200,000 students by the end of 2021, including secondary students. This first roll-out of the expansion will see up to 100 schools and kura in Bay of Plenty/Waiariki and Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti join others preparing to deliver lunches in Term 4. These schools are taking advantage of established processes to quickly start the lunches programme. Across the rest of the country, around 640 schools and kura have been invited to take part in Ka Ora, Ka Ako. Depending on how these schools provide lunches, some will start serving lunches from Term 1 2021. Our Mangere Community have been fortunate to be selected for the next phase beginning 2021. Announced as part of Budget 2020, expanding Ka Ora, Ka Ako aims to cushion the blow of COVID-19 impacts on students living in households which may now be experiencing heightened financial stress, job and income losses that can interfere with learning and wellbeing. Expanding the programme is also expected to support job creation and economic recovery from the pandemic. Based on information from the programme, it is estimated that around 2,000 jobs in local communities will be created from the expansion. We are excited to be invited to be a part of this programme which will support our community and ease the financial burden on our families. More information will be provided as it comes to hand. At the moment we are in the early stages of Ka Ora, Ka Ako.

Earlier this year our children were writing persuasive texts. There are many different perspectives and issues that sparked interested in our children. Here is an example written by a year 5 student. I hope his perspective can persuade you. Smoking Should be Banned for Everyone By Tyson Manu Smoking is bad for everyone and I think it should be banned and I am going to tell you why. To start with, smoking is unhealthy, smoking is bad for the environment and it costs a lot of money. Smoking is unhealthy Smoking is not good for your health. People that smoke cigarettes cough a lot because there are lots of bad chemicals in cigarettes and it can make them sick. Smoking is the biggest cause of lung cancer. Did you know that about 80% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes. If you want to be healthy, smoking should be banned for everyone! Smoking is bad for the environment Smoking is not good for the environment. Where do the smoke butts go when they throw them away? I will tell you where they go. Smoke butts get flicked on the ground and end up in the sea and sea creatures eat them. This is bad for humans too because we eat the fish and if they have eaten smoke butts it can make us sick. Another reason why smoking is bad for the environment is because it can cause fire. If someone throws their smoke out while it is still lit it can burn things that are on the ground like dry leaves. If we want to look after the environment, smoking should be banned for everyone! Smoking costs a lot It can cost a lot if you smoke. Cigarettes cost money, lots of money. A 20 pack of smokes can cost around $30 to $35. My dad smokes and he buys four packets every week, that costs our family $120 and that's a lot of money. If my dad stops smoking we can use that money to buy other stuff we want like toys, I can get a motorbike or a PS5 and we can go on more family vacations. If you want more money to do fun stuff, smoking should be banned for everyone! Smoking should be banned for everyone because there aren’t any good reasons why you should smoke. Smoking is unhealthy, it is bad for the environment and smoking costs a lot of money so I believe smoking should be banned for everyone and I hope you do too.
