Structured Literacy at Mangere Central School
Structured Literacy is a research-based approach to teaching reading and writing that gives children clear, systematic, and step-by-step instruction. It focuses on building strong foundations by teaching sounds (phonics), spelling patterns, vocabulary, and comprehension in a logical order, so that every learner has the tools they need to succeed. This approach ensures that children are not just memorising words, but truly understanding how language works, helping them become confident, independent readers and writers. It supports the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), which highlights the importance of literacy as the key to learning across all areas, enabling students to “make meaning of ideas they receive and create meaning for themselves” (NZC, English Learning Area, Ministry of Education, 2007).
